I haven't blogged since last summer. It wasn't intentional. We purchased a building downtown and I set up my new photography studio. It's been a busy year with that and life!

I have been taking cemetery walks though and plan to begin blogging again soon.

Thanks for sticking around!Gale Wallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04010608779221703855noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6123824004982243584.post-10770409269938080492015-07-08T12:36:00.000-05:002015-07-08T12:43:41.303-05:00Talk 20 Slides 16-20Wow, did life get busy. Shortly after my talk my Daddy passed away. And, as I felt things slowing down from all that comes with that we had the opportunity to purchase a downtown building after a 2+ year search. So, here we are in July!

Let's wrap up the slides.

Tombstones

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 13.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Eastside Cemetery is also the location for Talking Tombstones, an annual fundraiser of the
Hutchinson Theatre Guild. Since
2007 actors have portrayed the lives of over 50 people buried at Eastside. Many
of them were prominent citizens responsible for the development of our city.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 13.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Others
were stories that needed to be remembered like the murder of the 5 Moore
children and Laura Fife, a young black girl that fell to her death from the
roller coaster in Riverside Park, present day Carey Park.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 13.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Mark
your calendars for October 24th for the 9th annual
Talking Tombstones and support your local theatre guild.

In 2009 I coordinated a project for the

did not have one. Through a grant from Honoring Our

caretakers and members of our genealogical society, Dwayne & Vivian Gobin
and Jay and Jeannie Moore.
to help researchers find a cemetery, but especially for those burials located
in rural and remote locations, including fields that are farmed around them.
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 13.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Eastside
is the oldest cemetery in Hutchinson, but not the first. It was established about
1879 when graves were moved from the original city cemetery location that is
present day 17th and Monroe area.

ledger at City Hall dated 1880 discusses the number of bodies in the old
cemetery, for them to be counted before moving.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 13.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Records
for Eastside begin in the 1884 so there are many interments unknown from both
those moved and early burials.

Eastside Cemetery lot by lot is an ongoing project of mine, and one I've worked
on with my friend, Kathleen Dankanyin. It is my goal, through my photographs and
cross referencing available records to create a good record for future
generations.

Slide 1: My Journey

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 13.0pt; line-height: 115%;">This
is one of the first graves I can remember photographing. It was taken in 1977
and it would be more than 20 years before my travel plans intentionally
included cemetery walks. My
journey began in 1999 when I became interested in my family history. My
research included visiting cemeteries to document the burial of my ancestors
and somewhere
along the way I began to notice the landscapes, beautifully carved headstones
and epitaphs on many of the stones. I’ll be sharing some of the things I've
found or look for on my walks.

Slide 2: Preservation

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 13.0pt; line-height: 115%;">I've noticed that time, elements and vandalism are taking a toll on many cemeteries
and stones. In
2004 I began to photograph for preservation purposes. If it is a large cemetery
I locate the older section and photograph those stones first or as many as I
can. This
headstone in the Sylvia Cemetery is a reminder of why I choose to do this. The photos
were taken 3 years apart and the image no longer exists on the stone.

Slide 3: Art

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 13.0pt; line-height: 115%;">There
are some incredible pieces of art that mark the resting place of people. I've
seen some that take my breath away and others that make my heart sad. Beautifully
carved stones with lifelike features and details. One
of my future projects will be to research stone carvers. In this region I
haven’t seen many headstones with the signature of the stone carver so I may
find it to be a challenging project. There
are a limited number that use skill, hands & tools to create these works
today.

Slide 4: Headstone from Sears

Monument companies were not always the only place
to purchase a headstone. For many decades you could order one from a Sears and
Montgomery Ward catalog. Grave guards and arches first appeared in the
1897 Sears Fall catalog and Sears issued a special tombstone catalog annually
from 1902 until 1949. Montgomery Ward began issuing their own in 1920. This

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 13.0pt; line-height: 115%;">An
interesting find in cemeteries I've visited on the east coast and southern
states are headstones with death or winged heads and soul effigies. A symbol for death, danger or the dead, as well
as piracy, a death head usually consists of a skull with or without two long crossed
bones. The winged heads are not as sinister looking
and symbolic of the soul freed and taken into the afterlife.

Lawton, who led the pursuit of Geronimo in 1886.

Buried: Ft. Huachuca Post Cemetery, Cochise County, AZ. Section 3, Lot 55

Based on a letter written by her mother, (linked below) weeks after Annie's death it is a good guess that she was under the age of 2.

Annie's parents are buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Please take time to read this heartbreaking letter that Mary wrote to her mother the month following Annie's death. Perhaps Annie was named after her grandmother, Mary's mother, Annie Craig.

Major General Lawton was killed in 1899. In the 1900 Jefferson County, KY federal census Mary Lawton is widowed with 4 children at home. The census record states she has 4 of 7 children living. If Annie is one of them I wonder where the other two were buried since they moved around a lot with his military career.
Perhaps one of the most infamous and bizarre attractions inside Greensburg's Fairview Cemetery is what locals have come to call "The baby in the glass." The above ground baby mausoleum has fueled speculation for years about its unknown history and unusual characteristics.

While many wonder about the motivation or possible purpose of the memorial, there is no questioning that it is a marker for a baby who passed away on the same day as her birth.

The headstone is a glass fronted cave measuring about one and a half feet tall and is located in the old section of the local cemetery.

Some say the child was born to a family who was passing though Greensburg.
Others say they remember the family and that they owned a large black sedan that would burp plumes of ebony smoke.

Former cemetery sexton Ed Schoenberger said that when he discovered the headstone around 1989. He said the front glass had been broken and that there were shards strewn across the cemetery lawn.

Schoenberger didn't say if someone had broken into it, or if something had broken out of it. He did dismiss the notion that the child had been buried above ground inside of the glass and stone enclosure but said it was filled with strange wires. But one could wonder about the make-up of a man that so enjoys the company of the deceased he would make it his occupation.

Schoenberger said he spent hours piecing together the broken glass to decipher the writing, which revealed the father's name and the date of the baby's birth and death.

The front glass identified it as the grave of the "Daughter of F.L. Scott." The birthday and day of death are both listed as July 26, 1925 though local papers never reported on the passing of the baby girl.

Interestingly the information, which revealed the name of the father and the date of death, were painted on backwards… from the inside of the tomb.

My list is now 361 cemeteries that I have photographed. Most are partial, but a large number are complete at the time I visited.

I need to decide "what" to do with all of my photos. I opted not to renew my Flickr account this year, so the organization I had no longer applies to the work posted there.

After a week of wonderful warm days we are back to cold gray skies. Sigh. I have a short list of post ideas and need to carve out the time to get back on a blogging schedule.

We're in the middle of a major remodel, which affects my work space, and I am continuing to oversee the care of my Daddy. He health has declined rapidly since last summer. Prayers are appreciated.

I can always count on these to get me through the dreary days. I love my small library of cemetery related books, along with others on genealogy, photography and cooking.

I'm sharing pages from Sears catalogs about tombstones. I would love to own original monument catalogs or even digital copies.

I often see many of these styles in the cemetery.
Where did the year go? I've had a great time working on my photography business and am excited for what 2014 holds.

I'll be back to blogging on a regular basis in the new year. I had hoped to end the year with 350 as my count for cemeteries I've photographed (partial or complete). I'm at 349.

My son returned in early August from his second deployment to Afghanistan. We are so thankful for his safe return and that we will celebrate Christmas all together.

Thank you for following my blog and taking these cemetery walks with me. In case I don't have time to post before the end of the year I'll leave you with this photo from the St. Thomas Cemetery in Denton County, Texas.

Ludwig Blumberg walked this earth a short time. In the 1900 Federal Census, for Denton County, Texas, he was 11 years old. His mother had 4 of 8 children living at the time. Ludwig would die 7 years later. Such heartache I can only imagine.

I've been busy with my photography business and I've taken a little break from blogging. That hasn't stopped me from taking cemetery walks though.

Long car rides are not how I like to spend my time. So, when visiting my son we drive halfway. In early August we made the trip to welcome him home from his second deployment in Afghanistan. Coming home we stopped in Springfield, MO and I visited 3 cemeteries: Hazelwood, Springfield National and Temple Israel.

I checked my list of walks and the count is 348 cemeteries in which I have taken photos. The big question I must answer by the end of my new flickr year is do I keep paying to have them online? What will happen to them when I step into eternity? I don't have time (or the desire - don't ask) to put them on Find-A-Grave. I've considered contacting and donating to Ancestry.com (would they even want them?). Do you have any suggestions? I'd love to hear from you.

Reno County, KS

I photographed this little marker on a previous visit because I love finding the zinc monuments on my cemetery walks. You can find other posts on White Bronze and zink by using the labels on this post.

I recently had an opportunity to visit the cemetery again and decided to use my glove as a reference of size.
When I find any stone with an epitaph I tried to find the source: Scripture, poem, song, etc.
I couldn't find a way to make it work. I think I've figured out how I can now separate the two things I blog/do the most: genealogy/cemeteries and photography.

I officially launched my photography business this year after I spent last year preparing on the business side while stepping down, letting go and resigning from many things in order to make more time for fewer tasks, with big hopes of doing a better job on each. I still haven't decided if my Piney Woods & Prairie Winds genealogy blog will come out of hibernation or not.

So, with all of that said here is where I'm active these days:

Digital Cemetery Walk {you are here}

Eastside Cemetery: Blog for my "pay it forward" project, researching the oldest cemetery in our city.

Gale Wall: Blog where I share what doesn't fit anywhere else... recipe and misc photos.

Gale Wall Photography: My business - Blog, Facebook and G+ Page.

Many of you were in my G+ circles and had me in your circles. Please add me again. Thanks!
Now, I think I've figured out my Google Reader dilemma. For now I've chosen Feedly for my PC and Android. It's on my iPad but I'll see if my Feeddler app continues to work.Gale Wallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04010608779221703855noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6123824004982243584.post-45399981479076377092013-03-05T11:17:00.002-06:002013-03-05T11:23:40.974-06:00Revolutionary VoicesRevolutionary Voices: A Last Muster Film
