Republican even in death

Today is election day and so I thought I'd revisit the headstone of Nathan Grigsby. Even in death he wanted the world to know what he thought of the democratic party.

Attica Cemetery Walk

This cemetery holds a very interesting headstone that I have blogged about before. Nathan Grigsby's headstone has a lot to tell us:

1. He went to school with the Lincoln's [as in Abraham Lincoln].

2. His brother, Aaron, married the oldest sister of Abe Lincoln. [Sarah was the only sibling of President Lincoln to live to adulthood].

3. He visited the white house.

4. Notes his service in the Civil War.

But the one that gives you a good laugh is...

5. His dying protest against the democratic party. Seems party divisions were alive and well in his time just like ours today.

Second Look

It wasn't until I looked through these pictures again from Attica Cemetery that I realized this was not a Rock of Ages headstone. It's a sweet remembrance for a young woman. My trip to this cemetery was unusual in that it is an hour and half from my house. My husband, being the good sport that he is when it comes to visiting cemeteries, drove with me to find this particular cemetery to see the Nathan Grigsby lot that I had heard about.
