State by State

I spent a few hours today organizing my files before I create a new backup schedule and the task of tagging in Lightroom.

Cemeteries by state

AL 21
AR 2
AZ 4
FL 6
GA 35
KS 246
KY 1
MO 7

Summer Cemetery Walks

I didn't blog this Spring and Summer but I did take a few cemetery walks in my travels.

Arizona (Cochise County)
Boothill Graveyard
Ft. Huachuca Post
Southern Arizona Veterans
Tombstone Cemetery Old

Kansas (Butler, Cherokee, Riley, Pottawattimie & Sedgwick Counties)
Crocker
Leon
Pets Rest
Sunset
Wamego City

New Mexico (De Baca and Dona Ana Counties)
Garden of Memories
Ft. Sumner
Ft. Sumner Old

Rainbow at headstone
Ft. Sumner Cemetery, De Baca Co., NM

My list is now 361 cemeteries that I have photographed. Most are partial, but a large number are complete at the time I visited.

I need to decide "what" to do with all of my photos. I opted not to renew my Flickr account this year, so the organization I had no longer applies to the work posted there.

Walks & Books Update

I recently updated my cemetery walks list. I really thought it was closer to 350 but I guess not. I know how to fix that :)

I am working on updating my bookshelf. The project of "home library" has been on my to-do list forever. I started out manually creating this document but fell behind on other categories while I kept up a little better on the cemetery category.

Cemetery Bookshelf

To speed things up I am experimenting with the Android App Codex. I selected this one for its ease and ability to export the list. And, it's free!

Codex, Library Catalog

I started by: (see photo below)
  1. Scanning the ISBN code on the books. It found and generated the listing for me. On the booklets without a code I manually entered as much data as I felt I needed in the default menu
  2. In the Other menu I tagged it as my cemetery category and
  3. In the personal menu I checked that I own this book and if I have read it

These photos reflect:
  1. Collections created: Cemetery is the only one so far
  2. Categories created from the book based on ISBN data
  3. The books in the cemetery collection

If I like it I will expand to include the rest of our home library. Features that will be useful to me: the ability to create a wishlist and able to check and see if I own a book from anywhere as long as I have my phone.

Using the Codex app export function these are the books I need to add to my bookshelf list:
  • Bellefontaine Cemetery: Civil War Tour Booklet, Bellefontaine Cemetery Association
  • Bellefontaine Cemetery: A Journey Through History, Bellefontaine Cemetery Association
  • Final Thoughts, Eternal Beauty in Stone, John Thomas Grant
  • Forever L.A., A Field Guide to Los Angeles Area Cemeteries & Their Residents, Douglas Keister
  • Historic Bonaventure Cemetery, Photographs from the Collection of the Georgia Historical Society, Mandi Dale Johnson;Mandi Johnson;Amie Marie Wilson;Historical Society Georgia
  • Movers and Shakers, Scalawags and Suffragettes, Tales from Bellefontaine Cemetery, 1849-2006, Carol Ferring Shepley
  • Savannah's Laurel Grove Cemetery, John Walker Guss
  • Savannah Cemeteries,  Matthew Propst
  • Stony Point Church and Cemetery, And Historic Hickory Point, Ruth Endicott Brown
  • Tales Behind the Tombstones, The Deaths and Burials of the Old West's Most Nefarious Outlaws, Notorious Women, and Celebrated Lawmen, Chris Enss

Android X2 Codex

The photo above reflects the book list on my phone (Droid X2). I exported the file as .CSV so that I could open it in Excel on my laptop, which is reflected on the computer screen behind my phone.

Technology is wonderful. Technology in our hobbies: genealogy, cemeteries, photography, cooking, etc makes me a happy girl.

Many of you know that I love photography...I am planning to incorporate Lightroom 4 into my organization and keyword tagging of my many thousands of cemetery photos. You'll be hearing about that somewhere down the road.

I know there are so many options out there. What do you use?

Colonial Park Cemetery

I took some cemetery walks on my vacation to Savannah, GA this week. Updates are on the walks page under GA: Chatham.

Our hotel was in the historic district and within walking distance to Colonial Park.

300th Cemetery Walk

I'm sure my number is higher but my count includes the cemeteries I photographed between 1999 to 2004 for my genealogy research and those I began photographing in 2004.

Returning home last weekend we stopped in Arkansas. On our way to dinner we took a quick stroll through Forrest City Cemetery. My list notes this as cemetery number 300.

I'm excited about the cemeteries on my list to visit next week. Stay tuned for a report on those!

Spring Plans and Photos

It snowed here. 19 inches later I am anxious to get outside.

I pulled out my local county map to check on the cemeteries I need to photograph. It is my hope to photograph every cemetery, meaning all headstones, in the county I live in here in south central Kansas. So far 34 are completely done and the remaining ones have been partially photographed. 2 of them will prove to be a challege since they are the memorial park type cemetery where majority of the markers are flat. These are the newer of cemeteries and fairly large. We'll see.

Those complete photos along with many others from my cemetery walks are also being uploaded to my flickr site. Online so far: 150 cemeteries and over 11,500 cemetery photos. I hope someone is able to find a twig or two of their family tree among them.

All cemeteries are circled on my map. Those in orange are done. 21 are waiting on me. I'll be there. Soon. I hope.

Photo Albums Update

We had a cold day so I spent time moving more of my albums over to flickr. It's going faster than I thought. So far...

96 albums
8,864 photos

I have my page set up to list by collection in the right column. Within each collection is a separate cemetery set. They will [hopefully] be in alphabetical order - which is a manual process.

Don't forget you can see a list of the cemeteries that I'm uploading on my "cemetery walks" page.

Drop by and check them out.

Cemetery Walks

I updated my walks list page. I was able to visit 5 new cemeteries this weekend despite the bitter cold. Good thing I didn't wait one day as we had several inches of snow on the trip home.

Marion Co., KS
Grant Township Cemetery

Douglas Co., KS
Deay Cemetery
Dow Cemetery
Pleasant Hill Cemetery
Vinland Cemetery

I'm still working on uploading my photos to the DCW flickr site.

Change of Plans

Last year I was able to upload over 100 cemetery albums. Well, I'm starting over. I've decided to put them on flickr because of the option to create collections and sets and also include detailed information for a set, collection or photo.

My goal is to load ALL of my cemetery photos this year. I must be crazy! Wish me luck!

Here is where you can find them. You can see the list on my cemetery walks page.

Bookshelf and Walk Update

I'm now at 190 cemeteries that I have taken photos in. I'm slowly getting the albums online. My goal is to have them all online by the end of the year. I'll soon be adding to this number. I'm going to New York in a few weeks and have been searching online for information on the cemeteries in the area of my visit. I have always wanted to visit east coast cemeteries and am so excited about this trip.

I've also moved a book from my wishlist to my cemetery bookshelf: Beautiful Death.

What books are on your cemetery bookshelf?

Cemetery Fix!

It has finally warmed up here in Kansas, at least for the next few days. So, what better way to spend it than outside on a few cemetery walks. Or 7 of them. We ventured over to the counties next door and visited some small rural cemeteries. These are the ones I added to my "walks" page:

Harvey County, KS
Harvey
Kemper
Old Halstead [Popkins]
Restlawn
Royer
Star

Sedgwick County, KS
Eldrige

There were some interesting finds that I will blog about in the days ahead.
