Photo Essay

My post, Photo Monument: a photo essay, was posted over on the Online Journal of The Association of Graveyard Rabbits, where I served as online editor for a year.

Stop by if you have time. I share about the West Point Cemetery of Kingman County, Kansas.

Photo essay: A set or series of photographs that tell a story or evoke emotions in the viewer.

This is why

It's a small world sometimes.

Shortly after I started my cemetery blog in 2008 the Association of Graveyard Rabbits made its appearance in blogland. A great place to meet people that share my interest. One of those people is Russ Worthington.

Yesterday when I posted the update on my flickr albums I never would have guessed that someone in New Jersey would connect to the photos I snapped in rural Kansas. But Russ did. When I read my email this morning I said to myself "this is why I do it." He also shared a public thank you on his blog and facebook.

The Cottonwood Cemetery is on the route we take to the big city about 3 1/2 hours away. I finally asked my husband to stop and give me 15 minutes in it after passing by so many times. When working with such a short time frame I always head to the old section and photograph what I can since those are the ones that are being lost to time and weather.

J. Whitall Reeve, GG GF of Russ, was born in PA and rests here in KS.

Online Album Update

I spent some time today uploading cemetery albums to my flickr site.

Out of 254 cemetery files 166 are now online, with over 12,500 photos. My flickr site is best viewed by collection which is by State - County. Within the collection are sets, which are each cemetery.

Spring Plans and Photos

It snowed here. 19 inches later I am anxious to get outside.

I pulled out my local county map to check on the cemeteries I need to photograph. It is my hope to photograph every cemetery, meaning all headstones, in the county I live in here in south central Kansas. So far 34 are completely done and the remaining ones have been partially photographed. 2 of them will prove to be a challege since they are the memorial park type cemetery where majority of the markers are flat. These are the newer of cemeteries and fairly large. We'll see.

Those complete photos along with many others from my cemetery walks are also being uploaded to my flickr site. Online so far: 150 cemeteries and over 11,500 cemetery photos. I hope someone is able to find a twig or two of their family tree among them.

All cemeteries are circled on my map. Those in orange are done. 21 are waiting on me. I'll be there. Soon. I hope.

Photo Albums Update

We had a cold day so I spent time moving more of my albums over to flickr. It's going faster than I thought. So far...

96 albums
8,864 photos

I have my page set up to list by collection in the right column. Within each collection is a separate cemetery set. They will [hopefully] be in alphabetical order - which is a manual process.

Don't forget you can see a list of the cemeteries that I'm uploading on my "cemetery walks" page.

Drop by and check them out.

Cemetery Walks

I updated my walks list page. I was able to visit 5 new cemeteries this weekend despite the bitter cold. Good thing I didn't wait one day as we had several inches of snow on the trip home.

Marion Co., KS
Grant Township Cemetery

Douglas Co., KS
Deay Cemetery
Dow Cemetery
Pleasant Hill Cemetery
Vinland Cemetery

I'm still working on uploading my photos to the DCW flickr site.

Change of Plans

Last year I was able to upload over 100 cemetery albums. Well, I'm starting over. I've decided to put them on flickr because of the option to create collections and sets and also include detailed information for a set, collection or photo.

My goal is to load ALL of my cemetery photos this year. I must be crazy! Wish me luck!

Here is where you can find them. You can see the list on my cemetery walks page.
