Online Album Update

I spent some time today uploading cemetery albums to my flickr site.

Out of 254 cemetery files 166 are now online, with over 12,500 photos. My flickr site is best viewed by collection which is by State - County. Within the collection are sets, which are each cemetery.

Picasa Albums

I've always wanted to know how many pictures I could upload in 1 GB of space on my Picasa Albums and tonight I know. I am at 99% and that represents 6,476 cemetery photos. Time to upgrade my storage so I can continue uploading my cemetery walk photos.

Cemetery Fix!

It has finally warmed up here in Kansas, at least for the next few days. So, what better way to spend it than outside on a few cemetery walks. Or 7 of them. We ventured over to the counties next door and visited some small rural cemeteries. These are the ones I added to my "walks" page:

I had an opportunity to visit a few more cemeteries over Thanksgiving. We spent the long weekend with our son at Ft. Sill, OK. All but 1 of the 7 cemeteries we stopped to visit were on post.

This photo was taken at the Ft. Sill Post Cemetery. I walked away sad. With the rich history of this area I can imagine many scenarios as to how this mother and infant are now remembered as unknown.

Cemetery Photograph Update

There are always so many interesting headstones to blog about and in the days ahead I'll post about some from my recent trip.

Something I found funny during this trip - After our cemetery visits I looked across the room to see my son using his laptop to view the cemetery photos he had taken. Since both his and my husband's eyes glaze over when the subject of genealogy, cemeteries & family history come up, I was tickled he found this piece of history interesting enough to take photos in the cemeteries. His graduation gift from basic combat training was a new digital camera and he used it to take some really nice panoramic photos of the cemetery and landscape. I'll share one later if he remembers to email it to his Mom.

Cemetery & Photo Count Update

I had an opportunity to visit a small pioneer cemetery while out of town. Add Eakins Cemetery in Denton Co., TX to my previous list.

Even though I try to delete duplicates I know within some folders I may have some that I resized for posting online.

Cemetery Photographs

My love of cemeteries developed through genealogy but it wasn't until the last few years that I really noticed the beauty that can be found in a cemetery. In the beginning my visits were limited to locating specific people, photographing the headstone for my records and leaving. That, however, changed along the way. Now I find that I will stop and visit any cemetery regardless of a family connection [and these days most have no connection].

I was curious of just how many cemeteries I have taken photographs in [that I have a record of] - so I decided to look. I also noted I began to take more photos after I purchased my first digital camera, no longer needing to be conservative with film and developing costs.

I keep all of my computer files organized in folders so pulling this information was easy. I have photographs for 116 cemeteries that I have visited. These 116 cemeteries total 16,687 photos. Of those 12, 238 are in the Kansas county that I live in. We have 54 cemeteries and so far I have completely photographed 34 and partially photographed the remaining. 3 are really large of which 2 may never get done completely but the other one is currently a special project I'm working on with a friend for our genealogical society web site. I also have 1,280 photos that others have shared with me over the years. And, I have a photo box that have several hundred taken on film.
